The FIFA World Cup is an international men's football championship that is held every four years and is competed for by the senior national teams of the member associations of FIFA. Twenty-four of the 32 nations who have qualified to play in the FIFA World Cup in 2022 took part in the most recent competition, which was held in 2018. The sole team competing in the FIFA World Cup for the first time is Qatar, making them the first hosts of the event to compete for the first time since Italy in 1934.
